GreenWave
The project GreenWave, led by European Energy, aims to implement cost-efficient RED III- compliant green Methanol production, providing a cleaner alternative fuel source for the shipping sector. We aim at providing 100,000 tonnes/year of green methanol, a fuel with a low implementation barrier and a virtually carbon-neutral production leading to 97% relative emissions avoidance compared to Marine diesel. This is a cornerstone in the transition towards a greener and more sustainable industrial landscape, in particular in the maritime sector.
The GreenWave technology was validated in a pilot plant that demonstrated flexible operation and is currently being demonstrated in our Kassø-PtX plant. Learnings from Kassø-PtX have fostered new innovative solutions that enable us to reduce energy consumption and production costs by. The project will deploy electrolyser technology with an innovative design that facilitates efficient industrialisation by tapping into existing supply chains, enabling significant cost reduction potentials towards 2030.
GreenWave will avoid close to 1,500,000 tonnes of GHG emissions annually, roughly the equivalent of the annual emissions of 3 large container ships on typical routes, such as between Europe and Asia or Europe and the Americas.
GreenWave is planned to be established in Denmark and will demonstrate how green methanol production can contribute positively in balancing the grid and enable the deployment of additional RE in the energy mix. It will further integrate into a circular economy by providing district heating and sourcing water for the electrolyser from the local wastewater facility. Furthermore, our consolidated domestic value chain strengthens European independence, security of supply, collective ability to navigate global disruptions, and the stability of supply chains critical for the green transition, pillars in the Industrial Strategy for Europe, the Green Deal Industrial Plan, and the Net Zero Industry Act.
The impact of GreenWave goes far beyond this first-of-a-kind (FOAK) plant in Denmark. European Energy is present in more than 24 countries with an RE pipeline of 65 GW. We will use this pipeline to accelerate the deployment of green Methanol production globally. Further innovation, cost reduction through replication, and reduced cost of renewable electricity will enable production cost reductions compared with the FOAK plant, closing the gap on fossil alternatives. Altogether, the GreenWave project will strengthen Europe’s position within green fuels with substantial positive implications for European technology in an increasingly competitive global context.
